🥞 A Redding Rodeo Tradition Since 1954!
What began in 1954 as one of the first Rodeo Week celebrations served about
700 hungry cowboys and cowgirls. By the late 1950s, the event had already grown
to more than 1,000 participants coming together for breakfast and community spirit.
In those early years, the Asphalt Cowboys relied on borrowed equipment from all over town —
including the Sheriff’s Department, local churches, and generous Redding residents.
Guests often enjoyed their pancakes and sausage at tables made from
doors laid across saw horses “borrowed” from local lumber yards!
As the breakfast grew larger each year, the Cowboys realized they needed equipment of their own.
They began buying and building tables, grills, and supplies to keep up with the demand.
One memorable upgrade came when they purchased retired McDonald’s grills that were
being phased out across Northern California.
Today, after decades of tradition, those grills — along with thousands of tables and chairs —
help serve what is now the largest outdoor community breakfast in the United States.
More than 10,000 of our best friends gather together each year to share breakfast — rain or shine!
